You Are Home — Exiting the Fort Pitt Tunnel, Pittsburgh
Original Pittsburgh Painting by Scott Kowalski
There is a moment every Pittsburgher knows.
You come through the Fort Pitt Tunnel and suddenly the city is there. The skyline. The bridges. The rivers. Downtown rising directly in front of you.
You Are Home — Exiting the Fort Pitt Tunnel, Pittsburgh captures that split second when the tunnel disappears behind you and Pittsburgh opens up ahead.
The painting is intentionally loose, energetic and imperfect. The yellow structure of the Fort Pitt Bridge pulls you forward while the city rises beyond it in layers of color, line and movement. Cars, pavement, buildings and reflections collide across the canvas, recreating some of the controlled chaos of actually entering the city.
For me, this isn’t simply a painting of the Pittsburgh skyline. It’s about recognition.
That view tells you where you are.
You’re home.

About You Are Home — Exiting the Fort Pitt Tunnel, Pittsburgh
Painted in acrylic on canvas, You Are Home combines expressive mark-making with recognizable Pittsburgh architecture. Bold yellows, blues, reds, blacks and whites create a cityscape that feels familiar without trying to reproduce the city photographically.
The Fort Pitt Bridge becomes the visual entrance to the painting, leading into Downtown Pittsburgh while the rough, heavily worked roadway creates movement in the foreground.
It is Pittsburgh remembered through motion, color and feeling rather than perfect architectural detail.
A Pittsburgh View Unlike Any Other
There are countless views of the Pittsburgh skyline, but few have the emotional impact of emerging from the Fort Pitt Tunnel.
One second you’re surrounded by the tunnel walls.
The next, the entire city appears.
For people who grew up here, moved here, left Pittsburgh or eventually found their way back, that view can carry a lot more meaning than simply arriving Downtown.
It can mean:
You are home.
