Do Not Self Censor

In authoritarian regimes, self-censorship becomes a survival strategy. But over time, what begins as self-preservation transforms into complicity. The more individuals bite their tongues, reshape their words, or avoid uncomfortable truths, the more power consolidates in silence.

Authoritarian governments don’t always need to jail dissidents or burn books. If they can convince people to censor themselves—through fear, surveillance, or the slow erosion of trust—they’ve won a deeper, quieter victory. Thought becomes dangerous. Expression becomes risk. And soon, the line between what is true and what is safe becomes impossible to distinguish.

The real danger of self-censorship isn’t just the silence—it’s the internal shift that follows. People begin to question their instincts, doubt their memories, and eventually stop thinking critically altogether. Creativity withers, public discourse dries up, and the future becomes a closed loop, dictated by the state.

Under authoritarianism, the most radical act can be speaking plainly. Holding the line of truth—no matter how quietly—is resistance. Because once people forget how to say what they mean, they risk forgetting how to know what they believe.
